Appreciating Abstractsby Dennis ClarkWhile we at The Paint Basket deal mostly with realistic subjects, be it in detail or impressionistic, there is always a place for the semi-abstract as well as the full abstract type paintings. If you do not like abstract paintings, as I once did, then I encourage you to look into this subject with a different pair of eyes, as well as a different attitude. There is as much to be learnt from abstract work as there is from realistic paintings. When I found myself on a Painting Holiday, already fully paid for, and having driven all the way to the South Coast in Natal, with the main Artist who could only paint abstract and not realistically, I had great misgivings. However, as I was already committed, I threw myself into the week's works with the attitude of making the best of a bad situation. As the time and the days went by I changed my attitude towards the tutor. His attitude towards rank beginners and all of us was excellent. His critique and knowledge of colours and how to apply them to any type of painting was amazing. The week that started out on a wrong foot for me turned out to be a blessing in disguise! I returned home a changed man! Not only in my attitude in general, but also in the quality of my paintings from then on. If you enjoyed these hints & tips, please don't forget to sign our guestbook.
