Colour Mixing

Extend your palette with these tips

by Nolan Clark
We often wonder how to mix a certain colour, especially the variations in colour, if we knew how the suppliers mixed them, then we wouldn't have to walk around with so many tubes of paint.

When you are working in your studio, it doesn't matter so it is quicker to buy the ready mixed colours. When you are on holiday or if you run out of a colour half way through a painting though, it is another story.

Here are some colours you can mix from a limited palette :

Yellow Ochre - Cadmium Yellow plus Cadmium Red plus French Ultramarine
Sap Green - Viridian plus Raw Umber
Burnt Sienna - Cadmium Red plus Raw Umber plus Cadmium Orange
Paynes Grey - Raw Umber plus French Ultramarine
Raw Umber - Cobalt Blue plus Orange
Prussian Blue - French Ultramarine plus Viridian
Burnt Umber - Burnt Sienna plus Raw Umber

These are only a few examples, play around with your paints and you will find more.

How do you know if you have mixed the correct colour ?

Easy, before you go on holiday or before you run out of paint (heaven forbid) make yourself a colour chart on a piece of cardboard. Make it small enough to fit in your travel bag. When you are on holiday you can use the chart to compare your colours.
