Nolan discovered he also had a natural feel for the arts when he couldn't find a printer to design a suitable logo for his video business in 1995. Out of frustration he sat down and drew it himself. Being surprised at the results, he promptly signed up with Dennis for a pencil drawing seminar. Nolan then joined Dennis in 2000 to form The Paint Basket. Nolan opened his studio in Brakpan, South Africa in 2001 where he held oil painting classes as well as workshops and seminars in oil, pencil and pastel. Nolan has since moved his studio to New Zealand where he gives oil painting classes, demonstrations to art groups as well as actively marketing his paintings for sale.His classes are held at the Estuary Art Centre in Orewa.
