We were all a little scared of today as only one student had done a little pastel work before.

Dennis was on holiday so Nolan conducted the workshop alone. He started us off by showing us the different types of pastels you get and when to use each. He also explained to us what types of paper you get and how to choose the right one for your drawing.

To enable us to get the feel of the pastels, Nolan demonstrated an orange and an apple. Then it was our turn to get our hands dirty. Take a look and see what you think of our first attempts.

Our Group Drawing Oranges Wilma's Fruit
Our group hard at work. The orange wasn't so bad, let's try the apple. Wilma finishing off her apple.

The theme for today was an ethnic still life. Nolan chose an African warrior mask as the subject. After tea he demonstrated the mask to us. Before he was finished someone had already bought it, it looked so good. We still had ours to do though, so after lunch we all jump in with gusto. Nolan helped us throughout to ensure that we were getting the proportions, colours and effects right. Some of us had never done any form of art before and couldn't beleive that we drew such effective masks. The finishing touches and the shadow detail really brought our masks to life.
