We really had a lovely day with everybody completing two 18" x 12" paintings.

Before we started painting Nolan gave us a short talk on what Impressionism is and where it originated. He also showed us what characteristics define an Impressionistic painting. Knowing that we where all eager to start painting, Nolan kept the talk to 10 minutes.

Nolan then demonstrated a bunch of roses painted in the Impressionistic style. He only used the primary colours, white and alizarin crimson. It looked easy, but was it really? We were soon to find out when we started to paint our roses. Three of the students had never painted in their lives before and were a little nervous, but Nolan and Dennis soon got them going. While we were painting Nolan and Dennis were helping us individually with any questions or problems. By lunchtime we had all completed our roses and everybody agreed that it wasn't difficult after all.

Nolan candidly explaining, or is he claping hands? Nolan showed us how to use harmonious or contrasting colours to acheive mood in our paintings Eleni's very first painting - ever!

After lunch it was Dennis' turn. He demonstrated a landscape using only a painting knife. We were amazed at how lovely the painting turned out without even a brush in sight. Dennis only used the primary colours and white for his painting. It felt weird not using a brush, but it sure helped us to 'loosen up' and paint with gusto. All in all we really enjoyed our day and look forward to next month when Nolan is going to teach us how to draw an ethnic still life in soft pastels.
